Spain Driving Licence: What Happens After 6 Months?

Published January 2025 · 5 min read

The 6-Month Rule

Spanish law is clear: once you have been a resident of Spain for six months, your foreign driving licence is no longer valid for driving on Spanish roads. This applies regardless of whether your licence is valid in your home country. The six-month clock starts from the date you registered your residency (the date on your certificate of registration or your TIE card). After that date, if you are caught driving with only a foreign licence, you face fines of up to €500 and your vehicle can be immobilised. This is not a theoretical risk — traffic police regularly check foreign licences during routine stops.

EU and EEA Licences

If you hold a driving licence from another EU or EEA country, you are in a simpler situation. Your licence remains valid in Spain as long as it is valid in its country of issue. You do not need to exchange it or take any exam. However, when it comes time to renew, you must do so through the Spanish DGT system, which will require a medical check. Many EU licence holders choose to voluntarily exchange their licence for a Spanish one to simplify future renewals and avoid any confusion during traffic stops.

Countries with Reciprocal Agreements

Spain has bilateral agreements with several non-EU countries that allow a direct licence exchange without taking an exam. These countries currently include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, and the Philippines, among others. If your country is on this list, you can exchange your foreign licence for a Spanish one at your local Jefatura de Tráfico. You will still need a medical certificate and to pay the relevant fees, but you skip both the theory and practical exams.

Post-Brexit: UK Licence Holders

Since Brexit, UK driving licences are no longer treated as EU licences in Spain. However, Spain and the UK reached a bilateral agreement in 2023 that allows UK licence holders who are Spanish residents to exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one without taking any exams. This agreement applies as long as your UK licence is valid. The process involves submitting your original UK licence (which Spain will return to the UK authorities), a medical certificate, your NIE, proof of residency, and the Tasa 4.2 payment. Processing times vary by province but typically take four to eight weeks. If your UK licence has expired, you will need to go through the full Spanish licensing process, including the theory exam.

US, Canadian, and Australian Licence Holders

The United States, Canada, and Australia do not have reciprocal licence exchange agreements with Spain. This means that if you hold a licence from one of these countries and become a Spanish resident, you must pass both the theory and practical driving exams to obtain a Spanish licence. There are no shortcuts. You can take the theory exam in English, but you will need to study Spanish traffic law specifically — driving rules differ significantly between countries, particularly around roundabouts, right of way, speed limits, and motorway merging.

The Full Process Step by Step

If you need to take the exam, here is the process: First, obtain your NIE if you do not already have one. Second, get a medical certificate from an authorised Centro de Reconocimiento (this costs around €30 to €50 and takes about 20 minutes). Third, decide whether to use a driving school or register as a free candidate. Fourth, study for the theory exam — plan for at least three weeks of daily practice. Fifth, pass the theory exam (30 questions, maximum 3 mistakes). Sixth, if required, take practical driving lessons and pass the practical exam. The total cost ranges from about €100 (free candidate, self-study) to €800 or more (driving school with practical lessons).
